Grief (William Grant Still) - Brian Sussman, Tenor Principal Vocal Artis

In celebrating Black History Month, Heartland Sings Tenor Principal Vocal Artist, Brian Sussman (accompanied by Maestro Nance), present "Grief" by William Grant Still.

Still (1895-1978) was an American composer and the first African-American to conduct a professional symphony orchestra in the United States. Still was a prolific composer of operas, ballets, symphonies and art songs.

This piece "Grief" was composed in 1953 with text by LeRoy V. Brant. The poem was inspired during a visit to a local cemetery where Brant saw a statue of an angel with his head buried in his arms weeping.
